A memorial will be held in Tehran to honor the life and enduring legacy of Mahmoud Molaghasemi, the first Iranian wrestler to secure an Olympic and world championship medal.

Mosque in Tehran’s Dr. Fatemi Square. The event serves as a formal tribute to
Molaghasemi, who passed away on June 30th, 2026, at the age of 97 while
residing in the United States, where he was subsequently laid to rest.
Molaghasemi
holds a distinguished place in the history of Iranian sports as the trailblazer
for the country’s wrestling success on the global stage. He achieved historic
acclaim at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where he captured a bronze medal,
becoming the first Iranian wrestler to stand on an Olympic podium, a feat that
laid the foundational path for future generations.
Beyond
his Olympic success, Molaghasemi also secured a silver medal at the 1951 World
Championships in Finland, solidifying his stature as a pioneer in international
competition. His legacy remains deeply respected by the sporting community,
continuing to serve as an inspiration for the nation’s athletes who are
