Olympic Movement Advances Sustainability from Paris 2024 to LA28
The Olympic Movement is strengthening its commitment to sustainability and climate action as it builds on the legacy of Paris 2024 and prepares for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Iran NOC; Tehran: According to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), environmental sustainability has become a central pillar of Games planning, with organizers increasingly focused on reducing carbon emissions, maximizing the use of existing venues and ensuring long-term benefits for host communities. The strategy aims to protect the future of sport as climate change continues to affect athletes, competitions and sporting infrastructure worldwide.

Paris 2024 introduced a model centered on low-carbon delivery, relying heavily on existing and temporary venues and targeting a significant reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions compared with previous editions of the Games. Organizers reported that nearly 95 percent of competition venues were either existing facilities or temporary structures, helping to minimize construction-related impacts.

Building on those efforts, LA28 is expected to further advance sustainability objectives through its venue strategy, operational planning and community-focused legacy programs. Olympic officials have emphasized that future Games must be both environmentally responsible and financially sustainable while continuing to deliver a world-class experience for athletes and fans.

The IOC said the lessons learned from Paris 2024 will play an important role in shaping future editions of the Games, reinforcing the Olympic Movement’s broader goal of creating more sustainable, resilient and adaptable sporting events for generations to come. As preparations for LA28 enter a critical phase, sustainability remains at the forefront of efforts to safeguard the future of global sport.
