The Olympic Winter Games torch has arrived in Milan, marking the start of the final phase ahead of the Opening Ceremony of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.
Iran NOC; Tehran: As Kirsty
Coventry, President of the International Olympic Committee and a two-time
Olympic swimming champion, ran with the torch along Via della Repubblica amid
cheering crowds, she described the moment as deeply emotional. Coventry said
seeing the torch was truly special and noted that it is a memory she will carry
with her, adding that anticipation is building for the Opening Ceremony and the
performances the athletes are set to deliver. In a symbolic and emotional
moment, the torch was handed to Coventry by Anita DeFrantz, an IOC member,
Olympic medalist in rowing and former IOC Vice President. DeFrantz has long
been recognized as a leading advocate for gender equality within the Olympic
Movement.
Reflecting on the handover,
Coventry said receiving the flame from DeFrantz was incredibly meaningful,
stressing that she has paved the way globally for women leaders in sport.
Sharing this moment together, she said, made it truly unforgettable. DeFrantz
also highlighted the symbolism of the occasion, stating that having a female
IOC President today represents exactly what the world should aspire to, and
expressed her deep appreciation for Coventry and her work. The ceremony was
attended by Thomas Bach, Honorary President of the IOC, as well as Ivo
Ferriani, an IOC Executive Board member and Olympic athlete, who also serves as
President of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation and the
Association of Olympic Winter Sports Federations.
