On the sidelines of the 45th General Assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia, Mahmoud Khosravi Vafa and Dr. Mahdi Alinejad met and discussed with Ms. Kisrty Coventry the President-elect of the International Olympic Committee.
Iran NOC; Tehran: In this friendly
meeting, the NOC President, while congratulating Ms. Kirsty Coventry on her historic
election as a female athlete in the position of President of the International
Olympic Committee, emphasized on the undoubted impact of this worthy election
and its role in accelerating and growing the development of women's sports
throughout the world. Referring to the women winning two silver and bronze
medals at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games for the first time and the equal
participation of male and female athletes in the Asian Winter Games, Mahmoud Khosravi
Vafa presented a brief report on the progress of women's sports in recent years
and the stronger presence of Iranian women in international arenas as athletes,
coaches, referees, and sports managers.
Then, referring to her general
policy of establishing closer ties with National Olympic Committees through a
better understanding of their capabilities and demands, Kirsty Coventry
expressed hope that in the future, the capacities of Iranian sports can be
utilized to advance the goals of the Olympic Movement. She also expressed satisfaction
with the performance of the National Olympic Committee and its coordinated
communication with various departments of the International Olympic Committee
and Olympic Solidarity.
As an Olympian and holder of 2
gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze medals, and with previous responsibilities such as
President of the IOC Athletes Commission and Minister of Sports of Zimbabwe,
Ms. Coventry was elected in March 2025 as the first woman and the first
President of the International Olympic Committee from the continent of Africa.
